Neptune is the planet of dreams, illusions, mysticism, and higher ideals. It dissolves boundaries, opens spiritual gates, and often blurs the line between fantasy and reality. Poetry, music and dance are among the trance-like activities which this planet favors. The shadow side of Neptune can be pretty dark. It has ties to drugs, alcohol, trances and addiction. It can create unhealthy illusions about people, ourselves and the world around us.
Aries, on the other hand, is the first sign of the zodiac—a fiery, bold, action-driven force associated with beginnings, independence, courage, and sometimes conflict. It is a sign of force, aggression and impulse.
On the positive side, Aries being very “of the self” can help Neptune’s influences can cause your sense of self to shift dramatically. This is really only a positive thing if you are actively looking for change or transformation in yourself. On the negative side Neptune’s “illusory” properties could leave some of us “self blind”, with our true natures coming out only in dreams. This also brings our inner creator closer to the surface. A deep well of creativity can come with Neptune being in Aries, especially if you have Aries in the 5th house or have an Aries heavy natal chart. When these two powerful archetypes meet, something truly unique occurs: spiritual longing meets fearless action, dreams take form as movements, and the collective unconscious is ignited with fiery intensity.
When Was Neptune in Aries?
Neptune takes about 165 years to orbit the Sun, spending roughly 13–14 years in each zodiac sign. The last time Neptune was in Aries was in the mid-19th century, and the next time will be in the mid-21st century:
April 1861 – August 1874 (with retrogrades in Pisces during this span)
March 2025 – March 2039 (upcoming transit)
Neptune in Aries (1861–1874): The Fire of Idealism and War
The 19th-century transit of Neptune in Aries was a time when spiritual idealism collided with action, and society experienced massive upheaval, innovation, and movements of fierce conviction.
Global Shifts:
- American Civil War (1861–1865): Neptune entered Aries the very month the Civil War began. This was not just a war of territory but of moral ideals—freedom vs. slavery, unity vs. division. Neptune in Aries manifested as a bloody reckoning of values, where dreams of liberty clashed with the harsh reality of war.
- The American Civil War officially began on April 12th 1861 at 4:30am when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Neptune would station at zero degrees on Aries the following day April 13th 1861.
- January 1, 1863- The Emancipation Proclamation goes into effect. The Emancipation Proclamation was a war measure that declared enslaved people in rebelling states to be free, authorized the enlistment of black troops, and outraged white Southerners. The proclamation was an important turning point in the war for the United States and in the eventual shift from the goal of restoring the Union as it was, to building a better Union without slavery. This happened with Neptune in Aries with Mars. Jupiter and Saturn were in Libra with a Neptune opposition to Saturn and a Mars opposition to Jupiter.
- April 14, 1865 - President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated by actor John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC. On the same day, Fort Sumter, South Carolina is re-occupied by US troops. Neptune and The Sun are in Aries.
- August 20, 1866 - President Johnson issued a proclamation announcing the end of the American Civil War: "And I do further proclaim that the said insurrection is at an end and that peace, order, tranquility, and civil authority now exists in and throughout the whole of the United States of America." The American Civil War ends with Neptune (retrograde) and the South Node in Aries. With Venus and the North Node in Libra.
- February 26th 1869, Congress passes the 15th Amendment, It gets ratified February 3rd 1870.To former abolitionists and to the Radical Republicans in Congress who fashioned Reconstruction after the Civil War, the 15th Amendment, enacted in 1870, appeared to signify the fulfillment of all promises to African Americans. Set free by the 13th amendment, with citizenship guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, Black males were given the right to vote by the 15th Amendment. In retrospect, it can be seen that the 15th Amendment was in reality only another step in the struggle for equality that would continue for more than a century before African Americans could begin to participate fully in American public and civic life. Neptune is exactly conjunct Jupiter on this day.
